Come read why this Gen X mom plays Pokémon GO.Pokémon GO has taken the world by storm. Most of the people I know that play are Millennials. I know very few in my Gen X peer group that play. In fact, it seems like most just make fun of it. I don’t mind. In fact, I find many of the memes hilarious.
Why do I play Pokémon GO?
Why not?! I’m fairly obsessed with my fitness. I’m committed to getting outside to take my 11k steps each day. If I’m out there walking, why not grab some Pokémon? My dog doesn’t seem to mind if I play when I walk him!
I connect with my kids – Do you have theme songs from your kids’ shows that run through your head? Do you know the characters from the show? I do! My boys have been super fans of Pokémon for years. In fact, they influenced their little sister’s love of Pokémon. We are all playing, which means we have something to connect about and do together. My oldest lives in another state, but we frequently text or snap about which level we are on or what Pokémon we caught. It’s fun – I’m not obsessed with catching ’em all right away, but I am having fun playing. We mostly walk around our residential neighborhood, so we are not getting much variety. We recently hit a popular park and I got my favorite, which is JigglyPuff.Cause everyone else is – I’ll admit it. I heard (almost) everyone talking about it, so I just had to play. I’m glad I’m playing because it gives me something to talk to strangers about. I’m seeing more people just milling about the neighborhood. I often say Pika Pika! So they know that I know what they are doing. Sometimes I’ll just ask if they’ve caught anything good nearby. That gets me some double takes, but my daughter is with me so it’s not that strange. So, are you playing or are you just sick of hearing about it? What team and level are you? We are team yellow and currently we are level 13.
