If things are looking a little different around here it is because I moved to WordPress this weekend. I had some issues with Google and thought it was finally time to make the move. I have to say it wasn’t what I expected at all.
I thought it would be expensive. It wasn’t! I signed up for 3 years of hosting and got a great discount. It’s about the price of one tall cup of coffee a month. I thought it would be too difficult to move my posts over. I got some advice from a bloggy friend that I walk with each week and she said that my blog is HUGE so I need to ditch some content. I ended up deleting a good majority of my blog. I had so many posts that were just not necessary. Deleting those posts made the xml manageable. I followed this YouTube video that was suggested by Ashleigh of Dash of Evans. I met Ashleigh at a blog conference in Chicago last summer. I knew she was on moving from Blogger to WordPress, so I emailed her for advice. Thank you Ashleigh!!
I thought that Google would NEVER release their grip on my domain name. Turns out I just had to log into my admin panel at Google and redirect the DNS servers. It seriously took about a minute to do and the domain pointed to the new servers immediately.
I thought I’d have issues with redirection of my links, but it was no problem at all. My husband helped and it works just fine. I won’t lose any of that traffic from my social media shares.
The only issues I’ve had is I didn’t plan ahead or think this through. I decided a few days ago I was going to move and I just pulled the trigger. I had no design or layout in mind. I’ve just picked a theme to use for now. I’ve added a few basic plug-ins. I am going to spend a little time over spring break thinking about what I want the blog to look like and learn more about WordPress.
What are your favorite plug-ins? I really need to decide what I am going to use for recipes. Do you have any other advice?
