My daughter dances at a local cultural center. There always seems to be something going on there, including art classes. While I am fairly creative, I have never considered myself an artsy person. While I appreciate art, I just don’t seem to get a lot of it.
The cultural center is currently having an amateur art show. I was interested in my daughter participating because many of her friends were in it last year. She’s just so busy with school and dance and didn’t have the time to create anything. I decided to enter with a very unusual photograph I took. A while back I was leaving my chiropractor’s office, which is in a location that always seems to be windy. When I got to my car I saw myself reflecting in the window. My hair was flying all over and I thought the reflection was really neat, so I grabbed my phone and snapped a quick selfie. It turned out to be a very interesting photography. There was so much going on in the photograph that it struck me as art. I think art is in the eye of the beholder, so I decided to put it into the show. Here is the original photograph. The art show had a child and adult division. A lot of the entries were drawings or paintings, but a few adults entered photography. Mine was probably the only one taken on a phone! While there were a few self-portraits in the show, there were no selfies. I doubt very few selfies are considered art. In fact, you can hear the guest judge discussing this in his critique of my piece.
I know the judge and afterward, I teased him that I didn’t get any gold stars or ribbons. The painting to the right was the winner of the adult division and the ones to the left got ribbons. I actually felt a little self-conscious about being in the show. I was told to own it, so I am. This is how I really feel though!Have you ever entered an art or other kind of show?
