Enjoy a Geneva cable car ride on your next trip to the city.
Last fall, my husband and I enjoyed a quick trip to Europe. We visited France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.
When we added Geneva to our itinerary, we discovered the Mont Salève cable car. We knew it was necessary to visit in the area.
When we arrived at our Airbnb, we could see the mountains where the cable car is from our balcony.
Geneva is located in a little outcrop of Switzerland surrounded by France on three sides. The mountain cliffs in the photo above are actually in France. When we were at the top, we could see the building where we were staying.
Visit the Geneva Cable Car
The number 8 Geneva bus accesses the cable car, known as Telepherique du Salève. Take the bus to the end of the line, and then take the 10-minute walk across the open border to the cable car station. There are signs clearly marking the way.
After purchasing a round trip ticket, you enter the spacious cable car and begin the journey to the top. The 3,000-meter trip only takes five minutes. The cable car moves fast, but inside it hardly feels like you are moving at all.
There are a souvenir shop and restaurant at the top. Since we love to get out in nature, we headed out on a trail. The trails were quite challenging to us Midwesterners that are used to more flat terrain. About 10 minutes into our hike, we were rewarded with a great view of the Swiss Alps.
We saw people hiking and biking along the trail.
Another ten minutes found at what many say is the best paragliding launching point in Europe. The views of Geneva were amazing!
We watched the paragliders for quite a while. It was interesting to see how they lay out and prep their gliders and then just trot down the cliff when the air is good until they are airborne.
Some gliders went back and forth along the cliffs, while others went straight out toward the city. The landing spot is in some fields on the outskirt of Geneva. We rode the cable car with a person who had his glider pack on his back. He had already taken off by the time we reached the launch site.
Riding the cable car back down gives you a new perspective of Lake Geneva. On the way up, the focus is on the cliff, but on the way down the view is of the lake and city.
This cable car ride was one of the highlights of our trip. Perhaps one day we will return and try our hand at gliding from this picturesque location. There are tandem rides available with professionals.
