Dutch Oven Pumpkin Pie Cake Camping Recipe

I love fall camping! I get to layer up in warm clothes, poke sticks in the campfire, and enjoy really great camping food. We plan on going out a few times this autumn here in Illinois.

We created this Pumpkin Pie Cake in the Dutch oven. Our neighbors were camping at the same campground and enjoyed this tasty Dutch Oven Dessert with us.

Pumpkin Pie Cake Recipe

This recipe is really easy to make. The ingredients are pretty basic.

Pumpkin Pie Dump Cake Ingredients

You need the following:

  • yellow cake mix
  • lemon-lime soda
  • pumpkin puree
  • evaporated milk
  • eggs
  • pumpkin pie spice
  • optional: pecans

There is a debate in our house on whether it should be topped with pecans or not. How about putting the whole pecans on half of the cake?

How to Make Pumpkin Dump Cake

  1. prepare the pumpkin pie filling and pour it into a lined Dutch oven
  2. layer with the cake mix

We recommend that you use a dutch oven liner for easy cleanup. Learn how to make your own Dutch Oven Liners.

We prepare our charcoal with one of these charcoal chimneys. They allow you to quickly prepare the charcoal without using any lighter fluid.

We used this configuration with the prepared charcoal for the Dutch oven.

The pumpkin Dutch oven cake takes about 45-60 minutes to bake. You can lift the lid to check for doneness.

Dutch Oven Tip
Preparing this in the rain? Place the burning coals in a large foil pan so you can move the baking Dutch oven and keep the coals dry.

This camping dessert is a sponge cake layered on top of a baked pumpkin pie.

Our neighbors really liked the cake, especially the pecans. They plan to make it at home for Thanksgiving.

Other camping desserts great for the holidays are Dutch Oven Cranberry Apple Crisp or Dutch Oven Apple Crumble.

You can place the dutch oven in your regular oven, you just want to reduce the baking time. You can also bake it in a conventional baking dish.

The cake would be terrific topped with some whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, but it was undoubtedly delicious without it.

Can this recipe be doubled? Would it require full can soda?

I have never tried to double it. I would recommend adding the soda slowly to see how it goes. You might need a little more than 1.

The recipe doesn't have any surgar in the pumpkin mixture. Is that correct?

Not sure what happened. I lifted up the parchment paper liner and set the dessert on the picnic table. Water, juice or something ran out all over the place. It tested done all over, before I removed it from the Dutch oven. My husband tasted it and called it pumpkin pudding. He said it was delicious. Thank goodness he turned it around for me, but what do you think I did wrong?

Diana Hansen

Did you use half a can or a whole soda? It sounds like there was too much liquid or not enough heat. My parchment paper is always a bit soggy when I make a cake like this, but I haven't had liquid run out.

Is it evaporated milk (as it says in the instructions) or sweet and condensed milk (as it says in the recipe)?

Diana Hansen

Thank you for catching that. It is evaporated milk. I have updated the recipe.
