DIY Dog Crate Organizer

Create a dog crate organizer to keep your dog supplies handy.
DIY Dog Crate Organizer Tutorial - On the go with your pet? Create this Dog Crate Organizer that attached to the outside of a pet carrier to hold food and pet supplies.

Our Cocker Spaniel, Cooper, is a special member of the family! He’s a rescue pet that has been with us for 9 years.

He loves us all equally, but he has a very special connection with our middle child. He has helped comfort him through some difficult times my son has experienced over the past 15 months.

Cooper loves going in the car. He shakes with excitement when he realizes that he’s going somewhere with us.

He stays in a dog crate in the back of our vehicle. We take supplies for him, but they are often all over the car.

I have created a dog crate caddy organizer to keep everything for Cooper together.

Follow these instructions to create one for your pet.

DIY Dog Crate Organizer

For this project, you need less than a yard of fabric, elastic, a dowel, and some hook & loop tape.

Get the directions at the bottom of this post.

This tutorial can be adjusted to make a larger or smaller hanging organizer.

I am really pleased with how ours turned out. We will be using it a lot when we travel and camp.

Create a custom Dog Crate Organizer so that your dog supplies are close at hand when you are on the go.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Active Time 1 hour 10 minutes
Additional Time 5 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 30 minutes
Difficulty medium
Estimated Cost $10

Materials

  • Fat Quarter of dog print fabric
  • 1/2 yard of contrasting fabric
  • 1/8-1/4″ elastic (not pictured)
  • one 11″ dowel (I used a 1/4″ dowel, not pictured)
  • sew-in hook & loop tape

Tools

  • scissors
  • measuring tape
  • sewing machine

Instructions

  1. Cut the following: Two pieces of fabric 15.5"x12.5" (back piece), One piece of interfacing 15.5"x12.5", Two pieces fabric 15.5"x6.5" (top pocket)*, Two pieces fabric 15.5"x8.5" (bottom pocket)*, One piece of fabric 2.5"x20" (strap), *There isn't enough fabric in a fat quarter, so I cut the back of the pocket in the contrasting print.
  2. Sew the interfacing to the wrong side of one of the back pieces. I serged mine.
  3. With right sides together, sew the back pieces as shown. Leave an opening for dowel casing and an opening to turn.
  4. Turn the back right sides out and press.
  5. Top stitch around the edges of the back piece to finish edge and form dowel casings along the top.
  6. Create the straps by folding the strap fabric in half longways and stitching along the open edge. Please note, I had to stitch two 10" pieces of my dog print together to get one strip.
  7. Turn the strap right side out and press.
  8. Cut three 5-6" pieces of the strap.
  9. Sew 1" of hook and loop tape to the ends of each strap piece.
  10. Carefully sew the strap pieces in place along the casing lines. Place one at each end and the other in the middle.
  11. With right sides together, sew around the edge of each pocket piece leaving an opening to turn and casing for elastic.
  12. Turn the pocket right sides out and press.
  13. Top stitch around edge and form elastic casing.
  14. Using an elastic threading tool to pull the elastic through the casing of each pocket.
  15. Sew elastic in place along both side edges of each pocket. Make sure it is well gathered but can be stretched out the entire width of the pocket.
  16. Carefully snip off the extra elastic.
  17. Pin the pockets to the front of the back piece lining up the outside edges.
  18. Stitch along the outside edge of each pocket, making sure you don't catch any other parts of the pockets or the dowel casing.
  19. Lay your pet supplies on top of the pockets to figure out where to the separator lines are. Mark the sewing lines with pins.
  20. Stitch the pocket separator line, making sure to give extra reinforcement to the top edge.
  21. Gather the bottom edge of each pocket by hand and stitch into place.
  22. Insert the dowel into the casing to complete the caddy organizer.
  23. Attach the organizer to the outside of the dog crate and fill it with dog supplies.

Would your dog be able to smell the treats right on his crate? They would be so tempting.

I have the perfect material to make one of these for my friend. She has two little fur babies that are crate trained.

I don't sew, but that is a great organizer for the dog crate. I could probably use one or two of those around the house and in my car!
