Dump Cake with pecans

You will also enjoy our other camping dump cake varieties: Lemon Blueberry, Pumpkin Pie Cake, Chocolate Cherry Lava, Caramel Apple Pie, and Cranberry Apple.

Dutch Oven Cherry Dump Cake Recipe

The ingredients for this camping dessert are really easy. You need a yellow cake mix, cherry pie filling, and a lemon-lime soda. Pecans and crushed pineapple are optional.

The entire Dutch oven cake recipe is at the bottom of the post.

ingredients for a camping dessert cake

Directions

Light charcoal hot coals for the Dutch oven using a charcoal chimney. This is how we start all our Dutch oven recipes.

Line the Dutch oven with foil and spray it with some cooking spray with a parchment liner*. You can also create your liners using this tutorial. We are concerned about cooking with aluminum. Therefore, we now line with parchment.

Dump the pie filling into the bottom of the Dutch oven.

Dutch Oven Dump Cake with Soda

Mix the cake mix and soda together in another bowl and pour over the cherry filling.

Sprinkle the pecans on top. I just covered half since some of our eaters wanted it without.

steps for making a camping dump cake

Place the lid on the Dutch oven, cover it with coals, and bake for 20-25 minutes, depending on your heat.

Use your nose to test for doneness. We could really smell a strong baking smell, and when we pulled it out, it was around 23 minutes. It turned out perfectly!

If you can smell a burning smell, you’ve baked it too long.

The filling was hot, but that didn’t stop everyone from devouring it.

This is NOT a posed photo below. It was so delicious that we were practically fighting over it.

Yummier than made in a conventional oven!

Dutch Oven Pineapple Dump Cake

A classic dump cake is made with a can of crushed pineapple. We tried using a full can of pie filling and crushed pineapple and discovered it was too wet for the cake to cook correctly.

If you want to include it, use half a can of crushed pineapple and half a can of cherry pie filling. What are your favorite Dutch oven camping desserts?

Would it work, and taste, okay to substitute the cherry filling with apple pie filling?

Yes! Although I would not add pineapple to apple.

Can you bake this in regular oven?

Yes. I recommend a 350-degree oven for 40-50 minutes, although you might have to adjust slightly for your oven or altitude.

21 oz can of filling. We typically do 6-8 coals below and 12-15 on top.

When you mix the cake mix -do you need the oil and eggs too? Or just mix it with the soda and pour mixture over fruit filling?
